Creative Technology Benchmark Study
A first-of-its-kind study to better understand the makeup of BC's creative technology
industry today - so we can help it grow tomorrow!
DigiBC, in collaboration with the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and BC’s Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training (AEST), embarked on an 18-month study in January 2020 to gather information from creative technology companies and educators across BC. This resulted in the most comprehensive provincial benchmarking for the sector to date.
The study, Benchmarking the Creative Technology Ecosystem in British Columbia, leverages extensive research and one-on-one interviews with experts from industry and post-secondary institutions across the province. The report gives an in-depth analysis of BC's creative technology sector and recommendations for its continued success.
We are grateful for the participation from ~70 companies spanning the animation, video game and visual effects sectors, along with post-secondary institutions representing 24 creative technology-centric programs. Their contributions provided valuable data and insights that helped shape greater visibility into the creative technology industry. This report serves as a clear roadmap and valuable guide to train people for the jobs of tomorrow.

April 2022 Update
Following the publication of this report, we are delighted to announce that the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training (AEST) has approved our application for funding to continue this important work for the sector.
The second phase of the project will focus on strategy development to support key recommendations identified in the study, including increased visibility of creative technology career paths, improved collaboration with post-secondary institutions, development of mentorship programs, and tools and resources to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion across the sector.
DigiBC is pleased to once again be partnering with ICTC to develop this strategy. We aim for this phase of work to be completed by end of year 2022, with a view to implementing programs as early as spring 2023.
